Edgar
Cayce on the Akashic Records – The Book of Life
Kevin J. Todeschi
“For
more than forty years of his adult life, Edgar Cayce was able to put himself
into some kind of trance state and provide individuals with accurate information,
called readings, in response to virtually any question. In this state he was
able to perceive a source of information which he called the Akashic Records,
or God’s Book of Remembrance’. As he give a reading, Cayce described the
procedure as one in which he became a portion of the records themselves. It was
while being connected to these records that all manner of information became
available to him. Also called the ‘Book of Life’, this source was the
compilation of every thought, word and deed that had occurred in space and time
since the dawn of creation. And it enabled Cayce to just as easily provide
answers into the nature of the universe as he could give insights into an
individual’s mission in life or a long-standing problem.
“Rather than being simply a place, the readings
emphasized that these records are everywhere. From Cayce’s perspective,
individuals could literally see the ‘shadows’ of the records in how they spoke,
how they thought and how they interacted with all others. Everything from an individual’s
qualities and imperfections to past lives and present conditions were somehow
accessible. These same records were accessible by the subconscious mind,
through dreams, through reveries, and through esoteric exercises. The records
contained an ever-evolving blueprint of the soul’s individuality that
repeatedly manifested in every aspect of a person’s life. Not only do the
Akashic Records store, track and compile everything about every person in the
history of the world, but they continually attempt to guide, educate and
transform everyone to eventually become the very best that they can be.”

“We are not physical bodies with souls, but are
spiritual beings who happen to be having a physical existence.”

“In Cayce’s understanding, influences from the
past are always molded and shaped by an individual’s will, desires and purposes
in the present.”
Page 8
… “From the perspective of reincarnation, an
individual’s growth is predicated primarily upon how wee he or she deals with
opportunities and circumstances that present themselves in daily life.
“Unfortunately rather than seeing that individuals
are very much ‘cocreators’ in the unfoldment of their life journeys, too often
reincarnation has been misinterpreted as a fatalistic journey, through
experiences and relationships that belong to an individual because of her or
his karma. With this approach, choices made in the past have somehow etched in
stone the future and life is simply a process of going through the motions.
This is definitely not the Cayce approach to reincarnation and karma in which
each lifetime is one of nearly limitless opportunities. At one point, Edgar
Cayce stated that approaches to reincarnation that do not take into account the
importance of free will, created what he called a karmic ‘bugaboo’ (136-18) – a
total misunderstanding of the laws at work. From this perspective, individuals
are very much active participants in their life journeys and not simply
sometime – reluctant observer.
The word ‘karma’ is a Sanskrit term that means
work, deed or act. It can also be interpreted as to mean ‘cause and effect’.
Although agreeing with this concept, the Edgar Cayce readings make one of the
most intriguing and unique philosophical contributions: the idea that ‘karma’
can be defined as memory. It is not really a debt that must be paid, nor is it
necessarily a set of circumstances that must be experienced because of deeds or
misdeeds from the past. Karma is simply patterns of memory. It is a pool of
information stored in the Akashic Records that the subconscious draws upon in
the present. It has elements that are positive as well as those which seem
negative. For example, an immediate affability toward an individual just met is
as likely to be karmic as is an immediate animosity toward someone else. To be
sure, this subconscious memory has an effect and an influence upon how we
think, how we react, what we choose, even how we look! But the component of
free will is ever within our grasp.”
Pages 10-11
“…
Although the memory is there, freedom of choice allows an individual to
determine the path he or she takes in this present life. In practical terms, we
may not always be able to understand why a certain situation was drawn to us
and in fact the ‘why’ may not be of primary importance; what is important is
how we choose to respond.”
Pages 11-12
“Rather
than being predestined, individuals continue to be in control of their lives
(and their perceptions) through how they choose to respond to the situations
they’ve drawn to themselves. Ultimately all experiences are for one’s personal
growth.
“It is worth noting that soul growth can occur
even when an individual has made the wrong choice. For example, in one case
which will be explored in greater depth in the next chapter, one woman (1523)
had obviously made the wrong choice when she married her first husband. However
that choice enabled her and her husband both to overcome certain patterns that
had originated two hundred years earlier. Although the memory (or the karma)
from the past had to be dealt with, it might have been overcome in an easier
fashion. It is interesting to note that the reading often suggested it was
better to make an erroneous choice than it was to be idle and to do nothing,
because soul development was only possible through movement, growth and
activity.”
Pages 13-14
“In addition to dreams, according to Edgar
Cayce, there is a very strong correlation between the imagination and one’s
intuition. In fact he stated that anyone who is imaginative is intuitive.
Sometimes an individual may have an unusual idea or a thought that comes from
out of the blue and perhaps that individual may even say, “That’s only my
imagination,” when in fact the information may be an accurate psychic
impression from the Akashic Records.”
Page 54
“In
addition to watching one’s dreams and spontaneous imaginative experiences,
methods of obtaining information from the Akashic Records may include hypnosis,
getting a personal psychic reading and personal reveries… Because of the many
conditions which influence an individual’s access to the Akashic Records, Cayce
recommended that any information received be weighed against what an individual
already knew about himself or herself. Just because something was ‘psychic’
doesn’t necessarily mean it is accurate. However if the information somehow
enables an individual to become a better person in the process, it is probably
worthwhile.”

“One of the underlying principles which Cayce
gleaned from the Akashic Records was the importance of personal responsibility
in shaping the course of our lives and the condition of the world around us.
Simply stated, we have an effect upon every soul we encounter, and we have an
integral role in creating our lives, our experiences, our relationships, even
world events. In Cayce’s terminology, our life is not destined; instead we are active
‘co-creators’ in its unfoldment.
Pages 78-79
“… the
Cayce readings emphasized that ‘mind is the builder’ and each individual is
constantly involved in the creation of underlying attitudes and emotions.
“… the power to choose, the power to exercise
wisdom is within our own minds, we will accomplish much more by simply
meditating...”
Page 80
“… any
awareness one might have regarding personal responsibility and co-creation is
easily forgotten. Frequently, individuals in contemporary society have grown
accustomed to responding to life as a victim.”
Page 82
“It is
true for the entity and for most individual souls manifesting in the earth,
that nothing, no meeting comes by chance. These are a design or pattern. These
patterns, however, are laid out by the individual entity. For there are laws…
“It is true, then, that there are and latent
and manifested urges, manifested abilities, manifested virtues, manifested
faults, in the experience of each entity. These faults, these virtues may be
pointed out, yet the usage, the application of the same is of free will …”
Pages 102-103
“… the
Akashic information for each soul resides as a blueprint and can be manifested
in such things as fingerprints, blood type, astrology, iridology, the
enneagram, numerology, dreams, self-hypnosis, personal reveries, etc. The
blueprint of one’s real self is even contained within DNA. … In other words,
many aspects of an individual’s life act as a ‘hologram’ for the Akashic
Records – each piece contains the entire whole.
“… an individual’s aura is personal
manifestation of his or her Akashic Record. Much like a network computer
system, it possible to access from the aura anything contained within the
central record itself. Whatever is going on in the person’s life is evident in
the aura. … An individual’s aura changes as his or her physical health or
vitality changes.”
Pages 103-104
“… as an individual does what he or she knows
to do in the present, then the records will bring into manifestation whatever
comes next on the soul’s learning agenda.”
Page 105
“Another method of obtaining personal
information from the Akashic Records is through dreams. Just as dreams can be
helpful in providing an individual with insights about her or his past
experiences, the subconscious mind, in the dream state, has access to the
records and is able to provide objective information about one’s self in the
present.”
Page 107
“… it’s not that the records are concerned with
predicting the future; rather their function is the analysis and tracking of
individual and collective opportunities for soul growth. The future is not
unmoving or predestined. It is dependent upon one choice leading to another and
then another. From this standpoint, the outcome of one’s ‘destiny’ is only
determined by how individuals utilize their free will in relationship to this
vast supply of data and available information.”
Page 122
“The similarities … are not to suggest that we
are destined to eternally repeat the same patterns and inclinations. Instead
the soul is constantly in the process of evolving onward, but that evolution
begins from the point where it left off.”
Page 126
“Individuals
sometimes have the mistaken assumption that when they are doing ‘what they are
supposed to be doing,’ their lives will somehow be easy. From the wealth of
case histories of the Edgar Cayce files, it becomes evident that this is not
necessarily true. For example just because an individual possesses an innate
soul talent from the past does not imply that the ability will be easy to
manifest in the present or the future.”
Page 128
“The importance of helping others was
frequently cited as means to overcome one’s problems and difficulties. From
Cayce’s perspective, there was always someone to whom an individual could be of
service. In fact, being of service to that one individual was how a soul could
perhaps best serve its creator. After all, that was an essential purpose of
one’s life.”
Page 130
“From the perspective of the Edgar Cayce
readings lessons that have been ignored or avoided are destined to become a
part of one’s personal future.”
Page 161
“The
Akashic Records of the future embody an ever changing array of possibilities
and potentials. They are the shadows of things which may be totally dependent
upon what one does in the present with what he or she has learned from the
past. They draw together probable events and situations which will best enable
each individual to come to know one’s self. Ever-changeable they are integrally
connected to the will and what an individual does with her or his
opportunities. … One’s future is dependent not upon what one knows, but on how
well one applies what one knows.”
